Mixed Media Art Journaling

Process and Benefits

Mixed Media Art Journaling is full of Possibilities….

There is a lot of freedom found in mixing up different materials to make something truly unique.

Mixed Media Art Journaling is a loaded word, full of many possibilities. Let me break it down for you. We’ll start with Mixed Media- which dates back to the times of Picasso and Braque, who are known to be the pioneers when they started adding pieces of fabric in their cubist style collages.

Mixed Media is an art process that involves a combination of different art materials in a single piece. For example, you may start with pasting collage or newspaper onto paper, then pen or pencil, then watercolor or acrylic paint. You may call that done or even add oil based supplies on top, such as paint pens or oil pastels.

There is a lot of freedom found in mixing up different materials to make something truly unique. Mixed Media art has been around for many years but the cool part is that everyone has their own approach. Over time, you will find your favorite supplies and combinations you prefer. The fun part is the experimentation which allows for this sense of freedom that only comes from following your joy.

How Can Art Help?

  • Expression of Emotions: Art allows you to express feelings that words often cannot capture. It’s a form of therapy that helps in releasing pent-up emotions and finding inner peace.

  • Building Confidence: Creating something unique can boost your self-esteem. Every piece of art is a testament to your creativity and capability.

  • Mindfulness and Relaxation: Engaging in art can be a meditative practice, helping you to stay present and reduce stress.

  • The flow state of engaging in something creative and losing sense of time.

Art and journaling aren’t just hobbies; they are powerful tools for self-discovery and healing. They allow you to explore your thoughts and emotions in a safe, non-judgmental space, helping you to process and understand them better.

My journal has always been a place I can unwind and release what's floating around in my head. By writing my thoughts I am able to find clarity and I feel refreshed because that process helps me reflect on how I feel almost like I’m stepping outside of myself. I also write all my goals down and keep track of what I’ve done and what is coming next. I love setting intentions for my day on paper. I would wander aimlessly if I didn’t have a plan. Writing allows me to life of purpose because I am mapping out intentions, goals, and dreams to make them tangible, while also expressing what's inside.

The History of Journaling

Journaling isn’t just a trend—it’s been around for centuries! Back in 55 AD China, people were already putting their thoughts on paper. Fast forward to the Renaissance, and journaling became a regular thing in the Western world, where diaries started to gain some literary value as people began to focus more on the individual.

In 10th century Japan, ladies of the court used something called pillow books to jot down their dreams, thoughts, and even add images and poetry. And let's not forget the travel logs—both in the East and West—where travelers documented everything from places and people to navigation tips and botanical details.

Over time, journals became more than just historical records. They started offering glimpses into the daily lives and personalities of their writers, making them invaluable to historians and anyone curious about the past.

The Journal Process

Journaling has been found to have a strong link in supporting mental health. Journaling can help you plan for goals and healthy habits, identify negative thoughts and rewrite them into positive ones, and serves as a great tracking tool to keep track of progress over time. There are so many benefits of writing in a journal, and you can make it serve whatever your heart desires.

The Power of Journaling

  • Clarifying Thoughts: Writing down your thoughts can help in making sense of them. It’s a way to clear your mind and prioritize your goals.

  • Tracking Progress: Journaling helps you to keep track of your journey, noting the progress you’ve made and the challenges you’ve overcome.

  • Releasing Negativity: Putting your fears and worries on paper can be a liberating experience, helping you to let go of negative thoughts and focus on the positive.
